The college recruitment window, explained

Most families find out how NCAA recruitment actually works at the exact moment it stops mattering: after the contact window they needed has already closed. The rules aren't secret, but they aren't obvious either, and they're different by sport, by division, and by year of school.

Contact periods aren't a formality

College coaches aren't allowed to talk to a recruit whenever they like. The NCAA sets contact periods, evaluation periods, and quiet periods, and a coach who reaches out outside the right window isn't being keen, they're breaking a rule that can cost their own program. That's why a highlight reel sent at the wrong time of year can sit unopened for months, not because it wasn't good enough.

The practical effect is that timing an approach correctly matters as much as the tape itself. Two athletes with the same ability can have completely different recruitment outcomes purely because one reached out inside a window and the other didn't.

The pathway starts earlier than most people think

  • Sophomore year: build the academic and athletic profile a college can actually evaluate.
  • Junior year: this is when most of the real contact windows open.
  • Senior year: by now the window for a lot of programs has already narrowed.

Waiting until senior year isn't fatal, but it does mean competing for what's left, rather than what was actually available. The families who move early aren't lucky, they just found out the calendar before it worked against them.

Where this actually gets handled

This is exactly the ground Platform Sports, one of the three founder networks fused into FAM, has run for years, placing student-athletes into US and UK college programs. It isn't a side note to representation, it's a full pathway with its own timeline, its own paperwork, and its own relationships with programs on the other end.

If a college pathway is even a possibility for your athlete, the only mistake that can't be undone is finding out the calendar too late to use it.

This is where your story starts.

Athlete or brand, the highest-quality representation begins with one conversation.
